What is a microphone polar pattern?

The polar pattern of a microphone details how sensitive the microphone is to different frequencies at different angles. It is always worth remembering that a polar response, whilst being drawn in two dimensions will always be true in three dimensions.

 

Below is an example of the polar response of a single microphone at different frequency points. Note that the polar response of a mic can change with frequency.
