Stereo VideoMic Pro sounds

Building on the success of the VideoMic Pro, the defacto standard for DSLR on-camera audio, and RØDE’s original Stereo VideoMic, the new Stereo VideoMic Pro provides a high quality stereo option for videographers, and is ideal for recording music, and the atmospheric ambience essential in building a realistic audio scene.

Based around a matched pair of high sensitivity ½”cardioid condenser capsules in a coincident XY pair, the Stereo VideoMic Pro provides a wide stereo image with natural depth.

The Stereo VideoMic Pro builds on the feature set of the VideoMic Pro, with an ergonomic form factor perfectly suited to DSLR, consumer camcorders and large-sensor video cameras. The integrated shock mounting system provides superior isolation from vibration and mechanical noise that can otherwise degrade the recording quality. Additionally the lightweight yet robust multi-strand cable provides excellent acoustic decoupling from the camera and offers significantly lower noise transference than traditional audio cable.

The user friendly designed rear of the microphone body features the power and equalisation controls, including a high pass filter at 75Hz which is designed to cut out the noise generated by air conditioning, traffic and other undesirable low frequency interference.

A -10dB PAD allows the user to reduce the sensitivity of the microphone, making it suitable for recording loud sound sources such as live music or at sporting events.

Like the VideoMic Pro, the Stereo VideoMic Pro features a +20dB level boost specifically designed to provide a higher quality signal with DSLR cameras. When activated, the typically low quality camera preamp level can be reduced, resulting in a lower noise floor and much clearer recording.

The RØDE Stereo VideoMic Pro is designed and made in Australia, and covered by RØDE Microphones' industry leading 10 year warranty.

RØDE have once again given us an excellent new DSLR mic this time in the cuter than a button Rode Stereo Mic Pro. Super sound, crazily compact design. This is a massive improvement on the original Stereo VideoMic. Another winner from the boys in Australia!

It also solves a major problem for those who have embraced the world of dSLR video recording as the sound – if available – on dSLRs leaves rather a lot to be desired in the main.

Next, the RØDE Stereo Video Mic is made in Australia, and that has to be good. I have had a tour of the RØDE factory and it is an impressive sight indeed and of course, Australian manufacturing, especially of an accepted world class product such as RØDE is famous for, should be supported and applauded. But best of all, it works like a ripper!

While being light, it is still a strong and well made product. For a true unbiased test, I filmed everything from very soft to extremely loud sources. The quietness of small birds, insects, buttons being pushed, foot steps of dirt and twigs, water from small creeks all sounded very clear and pleasant. Moreover, the mic also shined when capturing loud sounds such as crowds, planes, water falls, vehicles, and even super loud firearms.

I will never never film again without my Stereo VideoMic Pro!

When it comes to microphones I do get a real pleasure in opening the box and in this case I was not disappointed! The Stereo VideoMic Pro is well made and rugged but more importantly for the DSLR market it is light and manageable. To be honest I found the test results for reviewing the RØDE Stereo VideoMic Pro to be much better than I expected. For its size and price the SVMP is exceptional…

This is a beautifully designed easy to use piece of Australian audio engineering which faithfully captures ambient atmospheres. It would be especially useful in natural settings and at musical and sporting venues. I will find it extremely valuable in recording assemblies at the school where I work and in capturing B-roll ambience for my documentaries.

  • Will my RØDE VideoMic fit into the hot shoe mount of my camera?+
    • The RØDE cold shoe adaptor is a standard size adaptor, also known as a universal shoe mount. This standard shoe is suitable for the majority of camera attachments.

If your camera has a different, or custom adaptor, please contact your camera manufacturer for information on converters to fit the universal shoe connection.

  • Why do I get a low level noise sound when recording on my camera?+
    • This is usually caused by the function of "Automatic Gain Control" or "AGC" on the camera.

Basically, when the camera cannot sense an audio input signal it automatically increases the gain of the input. It is increased so much that the noise floor in the camera microphone amplifier becomes audible .

The AGC can be disabled on some cameras and it is worth checking with you camera manufacturer for information on this, which can sometimes require a firmware update to the camera.

RØDE have created the VideoMic Pro to help combat this issue, the VideoMic Pro contains a 20dB pre amplifier, boosting the mic signal so that the camera will see a good signal level and not engage its AGC.

We recommend setting your audio levels manually to achieve an optimum signal to noise ratio and disabling the AGC of the camera.

  • Why did RØDE use a very thin cable on the VideoMic Pro & Stereo VideoMic Pro?+
    • The VideoMic Pro (and Stereo VideoMic Pro) audio cable is designed with an ultra light, multi strand shielded dual core cable. This allows for far lower noise transference when compared to the older style cable used in many video microphones currently on the market. The chosen cable is incredibly strong and is rated to several thousand flex cycles, ensuring that the cable lasts a long, long time.

Of course if this is not enough, the VideoMic Pro comes with our industry leading 10 year warranty, ensuring complete piece of mind.

  • What 9V battery does RØDE recommend?+
    • We recommend an Alkaline or Lithium battery for the best possible battery life. All RØDE specifcations have been carried out using this type of battery. If you use a slightly lower power battery, the mic will work but may not meet our published specifcation.

  • Will the VideoMic range microphones connect to a tripod?+
    • Yes, all of our microphones in the VideoMic range have a standard 3/8 thread built into the bottom of the cold shoe mount for connection to a boompole, mic stand or tripod.
